...is out now, and available from Witch-King Records.
The debut full-length opus, Escaping The Abyss, contains eight tracks of majestic progressive black metal, contrasting extreme elements with graceful passages creating a sound that is refreshingly original and unique. Blending together a wide range of different musical influences, (including the likes of Enslaved and Opeth), Fornost Arnor have created an unmistakable style... one they have made very much their own."At least the skills driving Colchester's dubiously named Fornost Arnor aren't debatable, the musicianship being first class on this debut. At first reminiscent of a heavier Opeth, they soon smash any Swedish leaning away by bludgeoning you with crushingly heavy black-tinged metal at a serious speed. However, they're far from a one-trip pony, more of a mythical beast with many forms. In one moment they're full-on black metal, the next they're meandering through a beautiful acoustic refrain with clean Mikael Ã…kerfeldt-style vocals, before unleashing some clever progressive chapters. What is debatable is whether they've found their true identity, but the results are impressive nonetheless."
