I'm no musician so maybe my oppinion won't help, but i'll try anyway.
Have you considered researching some african myths and legends, perhaps some of the exotic creatures and superstitions its natives have (or still do) believe in. A good site to visit is It has loads of mythology from around the world.
I found out recently why female circumcision (sp?) is so commonplace in africa. There is a widespread superstition that if a girl has sex and still has a clitoris, then the clit will fire out of the back of her head when she climaxes. Makes sense in a weird completly barmy way.
