GrandDeclarationofWarandChimeraarethebestalbumsthey'veeverproduced.
*phew* Had to get that out of my system
But seriously, I believe Mayhem have evolved into something far more ambitious than they originally intended, They've progressed with pretty much every effort and the albums just keep getting better. So how about it? old vs. newer material? Does it compare to the old? Should Music evolve and recreate itself every now and again? Should a band remain sit there in some stagnant musical void for their entire career? (It's worked for some) is experimentation... GAY?
Run your mouth.

I love both those albums especially Chimera and i agree its good for them to spread their wings (tho i can see why some people might hate GDOW)
But...DMDS is the best album they have done and maybe the best black metal album of all time (for many different reasons)
Considering they have been out over 20 years and have only managed to produce 4 'proper' studio albums (wolfs lair abyss is an EP really) i kinda think considering their reputation their output should have been higher

Wolf's. Lair. Abyss.
But no, I agree. Post De Mysteriis Mayhem are better than they've ever been.
De Mysteriis is probably one of the pinnacles of "old school" black metal, but it's not their best album, arguably. I love the experimentation on Grand Declaration, lots of Voivod chords and things, which I think is great. Once you've made an album like De Mysteriis, like Slayer with Reign in Blood, there's no point trying to equal it, so pushing the limits with a bit of experimentalism is great.
