Carcass' Swansong is my favourite straight up Heavy Metal Album
Do Deep Purple count? They could be considered somewhat proto. I find them somewhat inconsistent however.
MIster Bones are Bad and Ass.
Blood Island Raiders are pure metal.
The Bretwaldas Of Heathen Doom's second album Battle Staff's In The Mushroom Woods sheds the doom to be an awesome slice of Traditional Metal.
And yeeaah, stuff...

You'd consider Machine Head for inclusion in a thread called traditional heavy metal? Perhaps they're easiest to describe at 'just heavy metal', but thats because 'metalcore influenced mallcore/groove metal' doesn't roll off the tongue.
