OK so Watain don't suck, far from it. They do get massively hyped though, and to be honest I'm not sure why. They play good, solid, heavily Dissection-influenced-but-a-bit-grimier black metal (which I enjoy to an extent; I'd probably rather listen to Dissection...) and from what I hear put on an entertaining live show, yet get vastly more coverage than any number of bands releasing better black metal. This year was rather good for black metal of various types, I wouldn't say the Watain album was even in the top 10 black metal albums really, yet they're topping end-of-year polls and getting plaudits left, right and centre. Is this just in the UK? Am I missing something?

Sworn To The Dark is quite literally the only Watain album I own or have heard, and I really do love that album.

Circle the Wagons was the best BM release of last year by merit of being released by Darkthrone.

The new Watain is excellent, not as good as "Sworn to the Dark" obviously and I don't see any advancement or evolution in terms of sound, but still a fantastic record, and definitely top 10 material. I think they do deserve the attention because they're great at what they do.
As far as black metal goes this past year, the new DsO is a lot more interesting, but they're completely different bands with different style and approach, so why even bother to compare. Jumalhamara and Horn put out some fantastic releases as well, unfortunately they didn't get a lot of press.

Yeah the new Horn is fantastic. I just recently got into them so I haven't heard "Natukraft" yet, but I'll take your word for it .

...and another thing, for not-so-original but good melodic black (ok then black/thrash) metal, Keep of Kalessin's 'Reptilian' beats 'Lawlesss Darkness' hands down
