How do you know tho? Is there proof that no-one else in the world used that action for any other meaning before that? No, there isn't. Therefore you can't argue that it was started by metallers and is solely metal.
I remember a while back an advert (HSBC I believe) that showed how the 'horns' was used by italian football fans to insult the ref...as I said it seems to have always been used in reference to the devil, which is likely why metallers adopted it.
EDIT: There you go. Ancient Greeks invented it.

You may well ask WHO CARES?....But I DO and I like to provoke thought (and this thread has been pretty interesting so far).
Sarahs Wikipedia bit was pretty informative...especially 'In Israel, the gesture is known as "Shabi" for its similarity to a snail from a children's TV show'. Truly Evil.
The reason I get annoyed by things like this is because I often question why we do things in a herd like manner. It is my personal search for meaning, in what I see as an often meaningless world.
When I see thousands of people 'throwing the goat' at a crap metal band, I ask myself 'what does it all really mean?' to the audience, the band or to society. Does the individual really believe in the connotations of the sign? or does the person even know that they are doing it?
I believe that in the current climate of popular culture many people (celebrities, bands etc) are using this sign as a way of meaning 'rock'...or 'metal'. It is has lost any real meaning, but is a rather empty symbol of a resurrgent musical genre. I have seen many celebrities doing this recently....from Avril Lavigne to Trivium. It is interesting that it is being used by everyone. But also is the reason I don't like it at the moment.
god i'm horny.....

Can't we just behave the way we are comfortable? I always greet friends in the street with a significant \M/, at gigs, I generally clap. Fuck, I also headbang, but I do that to most music anyway.
