If LoTR was written by anybody else, it might have been a decent book. As it is, it's a good story, very badly told. Michael Moorcock ripped Tolkien a new arsehole in an article called 'Epic Pooh', it's up on the intertron if you want to read it. But even then, you can see that the 'evil' is never explained, all the bad guys are black, oriental and 'fallen' mutants, modern life and industry is a great sin, as is inquiry into the world and not just accepting the nice, quiet order of things.
The more I read and think about it, the more it occurs to me that ol' J.R.R. was a colossal bastard. And don't get me started on that awful c**t, C.S. Lewis. 'Mere Christianity'? Oh, you can fuck right off...

I've just started George R. R. Martin's A Song Of Fire And Ice, and I rate his style quite well. Similar political intrigue to Jordan, but entirely more engaging. A friend was bumming on about Erikson, recently though. I'll probably read his lot next.

Moorcock rules and Discworld is shite. Only stoners and nerds like LotR, anyone else is just pretending.
