I wouldn't say that the 'extreme metal' scene is healthy, it's more like the bloke down the pub who sits in the corner telling monty python jokes..... It might make you smile, but it's all been done better and it's all been done before. But in all fairness this isn't just a problem with the 'extreme music' scene, popular culture has become stale, boring and uninteresting... Everything has been over-marketed to hell, look at this stupid 80's fad, it is far easier to flog the hell out of an old idea than it is to make a new one.
Gah, I don't know... Maybe we've all become too complacent.

I appreciate this is an old thread now, but I've been all uncommunicative for a bit.
I'm quite excited about the end in mass scene vibrancy. I also like that Thrash revival has hit. I thi8nk these 2 cyclical phases should reulst in a less prolific extrmee underground for about a year before a re-emergence of the exciting new threads in under ground metal begin to raise their heads. It'll be very special for those kicking about then. It will not stop the vast majority of bands out there not being very good. Because it's always like that in all the scenes of all the types of music in all epochs and continents.
These are my comments based on the evolution of culture throughout the ages. Nick Cohen seems to consider this to be a revenge from the middle classes. Will this continue with the stutlifying of social mobility? Also what's going to happen to the ideologys expressed in confrontational and rebeliious musics now that were drawing to the end of a far right influenced political cycle? Will NSBM be replaced Socialist Scene Black Metal?
I think this post should be read in the voice used at the end of an episode of Danger Mouse.
(I Miss Morgorth, I'd really like to have a gibberish response)

I think life in general should be narrated like the voice over in Danger Mouse.
