It's kind of natural if you ask me for metalheads to have an appreciation for blues - or at least a large swathe of blues artists - when you compare the component parts of both genres.
Both are guitar-driven, mostly around relatively simple but effective riffs; they both sound best when played loud and with carefree abandon; they're usually propogated by the kind of people pushed to the periphary by mainstream society (ignoring all the lame "rock" bands that have ripped blues off and watered it down, mentioning no names); loved by hard-drinking hard lifers...
Of all the non-metal genres, I think the blues is easily the best bedfellow for sure. Hell, you can practically thank the blues for heavy metal's very existence, certainly doom in particular owes it's life to it.

Catching up on some essential 2010 releases:
Burzum - Belus Enslaved - Axioma Ethica Odini Ihsahn - After StarGazer - A Great Work of Ages
Enslaved has yet to arrive. Stargazer and Ihsahn are excellent. The Burzum I find mixed (Glemselens elv is fantastic; Sverddans is shite) but overall very enthralling if I'm in the right frame of mind.
